Sibiu is located in the southern part of Transylvania, Romania, spanning the Cibin River, a tributary of the Olt River, and it is the capital of Sibiu County. The city is one of the most prosperous in Romania, attracting the highest foreign investment in the country. It has been designated as one of the “Eight Most Livable European Country Towns” in the past.
In 2007, Sibiu was named the European Capital of Culture, greatly boosting the tourism industry. Sibiu and its surrounding areas are among the most visited by tourists in Romania, showcasing historical landscapes and medieval military fortifications. In 2004, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized the military fortifications as a World Heritage Site. The Făgăraș Mountains, about 20 kilometers from Sibiu, are a popular tourist destination with many vacation villas for rent.
