The Epupa Falls, known as Monte Negro Falls in Angola, are formed by the Kunene River on the border between Angola and Namibia. Located in Kaokoland, Kunene Region, Namibia, the falls are 135 kilometers downstream from the Ruacana Falls.
While the Kunene River is only 0.5 kilometers wide, the Epupa Falls formed by its waters span 1.5 kilometers in width, with a maximum single drop of 37 meters. The name “Epupa” in the Herero language means “foam,” referring to the spray created as the falls cascade downwards.
Despite less-than-smooth access, the Epupa Falls remain a major attraction in Namibia. The appeal lies in the pristine environment, set against a vivid blue sky, featuring beautiful fig trees, baobabs, fan palms, and colorful rocks near the falls. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a stunning rainbow created by the falling water spray.
