Mount Meru is located 70 kilometers west of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is a complex volcano with an altitude of 4566 meters. On a clear day, Mount Meru can be seen from Mount Kilimanjaro, making it the tenth highest mountain in Africa. Most of Mount Meru’s mountain body collapsed due to a volcanic eruption in the eastern part of the mountain 8,000 years ago, similar to the eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state in 1980.

The most recent eruption of Mount Meru was in 1910. The scene of the volcanic eruption can be imagined from some cone-shaped hills and craters around the mountain. Mount Meru is a geographical landmark of Arusha National Park, and the fertile soil on its slopes nurtures a variety of wildlife, including about 400 species of birds, monkeys, and leopards. At the summit, you can see a 2-meter-tall Tanzanian flag made of metal, as well as a concrete monument inscribed with “Socialist Peak 4562.13 meters”.
