Porto-Novo, also known as “New Port”, is the capital and second largest city of the West African country Benin. However, this city is only the nominal capital of Benin, as the country’s actual administrative center is located in Cotonou, which now serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of the nation as well.
Porto-Novo is one of the oldest cities in Benin, still retaining a strong ancient African urban charm with numerous historical sites and landmarks, making it a popular tourist destination. Visitors to this city can explore ancient African palaces, colonial-era buildings, the Presidential Palace, and the Great Cathedral of Portugal, among others. Benin has been a relatively culturally developed country in West Africa, still preserving some ancient structures such as the Museum of Ethnography, the Museum of Popular Arts, the National Library, and the National Archives. The handcrafted products produced in this city and its surrounding areas, such as bronze works, wood carvings, bone sculptures, and weavings, are unique in style, well-known both domestically and internationally. Tourists can purchase these crafts as souvenirs, or as gifts for family and friends.
