Situated on a cliff 1318 meters above sea level in the northwest of Troodos Mountain, it is where the first President of Cyprus, Makarios III, began his monastic life in 1926. Makarios III passed away in 1977 and was buried here, just 3 kilometers away from the monastery. Over the years, it has become a well-known tourist destination. The current buildings of the monastery date back to the 19th and 20th centuries, and it is said that the painting of Virgin Mary inside the monastery is one of the three religious paintings painted by Saint Luke that still exist.
