The TrashiChhoe Dzong, a well-known Buddhist monastery, serves as the current office of the King of Bhutan, as well as the residence of the country’s religious leader, the Je Khenpo, and the central religious institution. Built in the 13th century, it stands majestically on the west bank of the Wang Chu River at an elevation of 2500 meters. The TrashiChhoe Dzong also functions as the government center of the capital Thimphu. The monastery has two floors, with white lime-washed walls and golden tower-turrets at each corner higher than the main building. In the center of the fortress is a square building for the leader’s residence, with paths on the left and right leading to courtyards and rooms. Despite being damaged by fires and earthquakes, the monastery underwent extensive repairs and expansions for over 5 years under the reigns of Jigme, Dorji, and Wangchuck III kings. Until 1952, the TrashiChhoe Dzong continued to serve as the seat of government administration. It still houses the King’s throne, office, and meeting rooms for royal consultations and official gatherings.
