The Sultan Ali Mausoleum is located on the outskirts of Dashoguz, a northern city in Turkmenistan. It is one of the three buildings in the Urgench architectural complex and one of the most iconic landmarks in Turkmenistan.
The mausoleum was built in the 16th century. Sultan Ali was a renowned Muslim teacher and poet in the 12th and 13th centuries. The mausoleum features three domes and a beautiful, unrestored entrance passage, which is very spectacular. It is said to have healing powers, attracting many pilgrims to pray here. The Sultan Ali Mausoleum is adjacent to the Kunya-Urgench, which was inscribed in the World Heritage List in 2005. The World Heritage Committee praised it as “Kunya-Urgench was the capital under the Achaemenid Empire rule in the Khorasan region. This mausoleum not only provides a unique example of the preservation of Islamic culture but also showcases outstanding achievements in architecture and craftsmanship of that era.”
