Kajaani is the capital of the Kainuu region in Finland, located on the southeast shore of Lake Oulujärvi. Established in 1651 during the Swedish rule, it is currently the center of the Kainuu region. Finnish folklorist Elias Lönnrot started his journey from here, collecting folklore from all over the country.
The Kajaani City Theatre was built in 1969 and is one of the most reputable theatres in Finland. It was named the Theatre of the Year in 2003, attracting many directors, actors, and audiences from all over the country. It hosts touring performances annually in the Kainuu region and other parts of Finland. The Kajaani Music Institute was founded in 1957 and holds student concerts every year. The Kajaani Art Museum, completed in 1993, mainly exhibits contemporary Finnish art works and is a great destination for art enthusiasts. The Kajaani Museum showcases the history and culture of the city through various themed exhibitions.
The two most important cultural events in Kajaani each year are the Kajaani Poetry Week and the Kainuu Jazz Spring, attracting poetry and music enthusiasts from around the world to collectively celebrate culture.
