Bregenz is located in the western part of Austria, on the eastern shore of Lake Constance, the third largest freshwater lake in Europe. Situated at the foothills of the Pfänder mountain, it is a gateway to the Rhine Valley and the foothills of the German Alps, serving as the capital of Vorarlberg state.
Nestled by Lake Constance, Bregenz boasts beautiful scenery and a pleasant climate, making it a sought-after holiday destination. The upper town of the city still retains its medieval charm, with the Martinsturm tower dating back to around 1600, now serving as a local museum where visitors can admire the picturesque views of Bregenz and Lake Constance. Known as the “cultural capital” of Vorarlberg state and the Lake Constance region, the city is home to numerous museums, art galleries, and theaters, with the Vorarlberg State Museum being the most representative, offering a great insight into the history and culture of the region. The Mehrerau Abbey is a Cistercian monastery with a history dating back to the 11th century, where the monks then had the important task of transforming the forested area around Bregenz.
Bregenz is internationally renowned for the Bregenz Festival held annually on the shores of Lake Constance during the summer, featuring a change in opera repertoire every two years. The festival theater, congress center, and Europe’s largest floating stage serve as the venues for the Bregenz Festival.
