Wiener Neustadt is located south of the Austrian capital Vienna, as the second largest city in Lower Austria, it is a charter city and also the county seat of the Wiener Neustadt city suburbs. The city is the birthplace of the world’s first military officer school and is still an important school for training military personnel in Austria. Additionally, this city is also the garrison of the Austrian army.
During the Second World War, Wiener Neustadt suffered significant destruction, but still retains some historical buildings. The Torture Tower, built in the 13th century, was once used to detain and torture prisoners, and is now a place for weapon collections; the Franciscan Church dates back to the 13th century and showcases sculptures of Saint Mary and Saint James. The Industrial Museum, the Hospital Museum, the Mineral Museum, and the Wiener Neustadt Public Museum are some of the more prominent museums in the city.
