The Caño Cristales River is located in the Meta Department of southeastern Colombia in South America, spanning approximately 100 kilometers in length and 20 meters in width. Many adventurers have praised it as the “river flowing from paradise.”
Caño Cristales River is considered the most beautiful river in the world due to the abundance of different types and colors of algae and moss growing on its riverbed. This creates a spectacle of colors including green, blue, black, red, yellow, and various shades of gradients in different areas of the river. The crystal-clear river water reflecting the colorful moss on the riverbed flows into tide pools like a kaleidoscope, making it spectacularly beautiful. Therefore, the river is also known as the Five Colors River or Rainbow River.
This beautiful river naturally attracts a large number of tourists. However, visitors should be aware that the marvel of the Five Colors River is not visible all year round. During the dry season, the water level is insufficient, and the nutrients in the water are not enough to support widespread algae growth. During the rainy season, the water flow is too strong and can wash away the algae on the riverbed. Hence, only from June to September, when the dry and rainy seasons alternate, can the Rainbow River display its colorful hues. Moreover, reaching the location of the river is not easy due to the inconvenient local transportation. There are no roads, so visitors must ride horses, walk, and choose the right time to catch a glimpse of this magical river.
