Yungas Road, also known as Camino de la Muerte, Road of Death, Grove’s Road, and Coroico Road, is a mountain road located in the Yungas region of Bolivia, northeast of La Paz, the capital city. The northern section of the road, spanning 69 kilometers, has gained the infamous nickname “Death Road” due to frequent accidents resulting in a high number of fatalities, with vehicles falling off the cliffs. Its legendary dangerous reputation led the Inter-American Development Bank to name it the “World’s Most Dangerous Road” in 1995.
The North Yungas Road connects La Paz in western Bolivia to Coroico in the Andes mountain region. The road features extremely perilous cliffs, single-lane width, narrow passing spaces, sharp winding turns, and virtually no guardrails. Additionally, fog and rain reduce visibility, while muddy road conditions increase the risk of skidding. On average, fatal accidents occur every few weeks on this road, with an estimated 200 to 300 deaths of travelers annually.
Ironically, despite its extreme danger, North Yungas Road has become a tourist attraction since the 1990s, drawing approximately 25,000 thrill-seeking tourists. Many tour operators now organize activities providing information, guided tours, transportation, equipment, and other services. In 2009, the BBC television show “Top Gear” aired the “Top Gear: Bolivia Special” in its 14th season, with the hosts driving second-hand cars on a 1,610-kilometer journey from the Bolivian rainforest to the Pacific coast, including a segment on the perilous North Yungas Road.
