The Martha Brae River is a major river in Trelawny, and there is a magical legend about this river. An Arawak witch lived on the banks of the Martha Brae River. When the Spaniards heard that the Arawak people had treasures, they caught the witch and made her lead the way to find the treasure. The witch pretended to agree and led them into a cave before suddenly disappearing. The frightened Spaniards rushed out of the cave, only to be swallowed by the Martha Brae River, completely altering the course of the river.
