Outside the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga, Nuku’alofa, there is a three-stone tower called “HAMOAGA” on the outskirts, which is said to be the archway of the old royal palace. It was built by the ancient Tongans with large stones transported from Wallis Island on massive canoes. Legend has it that this structure was built in the year 1200 AD when Tu’i Tonga ruled over the myriad tribes of Tonga. Over the years, the Kingdom of Tonga has undergone various dynasties, including the Tuʻi Haʻatakalaua dynasty, the Tu’i Kanokupolu dynasty, and the Taufa’ahau dynasty. However, the majestic and victorious three-stone tower (HAMOAGA) has remained standing undaunted, silently bearing witness to the rise and fall of Tonga. It stands as a triumphal arch made of three pieces of volcanic rock, towering at 5 meters high. In the early years, kings had to pass through this gate before going to battle in order to return victoriously, making it also a watchtower. The three-stone tower is the place where the first rays of sunlight touch the world, attracting many visitors annually who come to witness the first light of the sun.
