South Tarawa is located in the southern part of the Tarawa Atoll, and it is the capital of Kiribati. It consists of several small islands, with the main population and most of the government offices of the Republic of Kiribati located on an island named Bairiki. Half of Kiribati’s population resides in South Tarawa, with a population of 50,180 people according to the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Kiribati.
