Yap Island stone money is one of the original currencies, originating from Yap Island. The indigenous people on the island used large stone discs as a form of currency, as the area did not produce metal. Therefore, stones became an important resource on the island, leading to the development of a trading system where stones were used as a medium of exchange. The locals refer to this kind of stone money as “Fei.”
The sizes of the stone money discs range from 1 yard to 12 yards in diameter, with smaller ones about 30 cm in diameter and larger ones reaching up to 3 meters in diameter and weighing up to four tons. The larger the stone disc, the better its quality and the higher the value it represents. There is a hole in the middle of the stone disc for ease of transportation by inserting a pole. The stone money is polished to a very smooth finish and is covered with many beautiful and unique patterns. The patterns are not only exquisite but also intricate and regular. Each stone disc has the same patterns, as if they were cast from the same mold, although the origin of the patterns remains unclear. These rare stone money discs have now become a major tourist attraction on the island, attracting visitors for admiration.
